Greystone Will Lead Strategic Planning Zone at PEAK Summit

LeadingAge’s PEAK Leadership Summit is an event that caters to senior living executives and agenda-setters. This Summit is a place where non-profit leaders can talk strategy, address industry challenges and share ideas about seizing future opportunities.

During the BaseCamp portion of PEAK, Greystone will serve as the leader of Zone 3: Strategic Planning and Partnerships. This Zone will feature video interviews with non-profit senior living CEOs who share their thoughts on a wide range of issues that are relevant and urgent today. After each video segment, Greystone team members will facilitate a discussion among attendees as we share ideas and best practices for moving organizations forward and growing their missions.

Here’s a look at our agenda for the 2017 LeadingAge PEAK Leadership Summit, taking place March 19–22 in Washington, DC:


Monday, March 20

10 a.m. — Making Your Mission Come Alive: Your organization’s mission should make your communities distinct and uniquely attractive in their markets. Non-profit providers have traditionally promised to deliver social, spiritual and physical security and peace of mind to residents and their families. When those promises are fulfilled, missions catch fire and allow for growth. Are your communities in a position to deliver on their mission-based promises?

10:45 a.m. — The Non-Profit Advantage: People want to be associated with organizations that create meaning. That goes for your residents and their families, as well as your staff and employees. As a non-profit provider, you have a tremendous story to tell, but getting all members of your organization to consistently and effectively communicate that story is incredibly challenging. Are you sharing your story in a way that articulates the benefits and advantages of choosing a non-profit provider?

11:30 a.m. — Growth: Your Defined Strategic Target: Why grow with a laser-focus on your organization’s mission-driven objectives? Because growth delivers more opportunities to your organization and the people it employees. Because growth helps protect your market from competition. And because growth gives you the scale needed to maximize your impact on senior lives. If non-profits choose to pass on today’s growth opportunities, they are choosing to cede that opportunity to other providers. What’s your plan for growth?

12:15 p.m. — Leadership: Driving Your Team to a Common Goal: Non-profit senior living teams are full of smart people who see their work as a true calling. Our industry needs sacrificial leaders who are willing and able to harness this intelligent and motivated workforce in moving our industry forward. Today’s effective senior living leaders are creating and sharing mission-based visions, acquiring the talent needed to achieve those visions, and promoting the idea that all team members have a voice — and that the best idea, answer or solution always wins the day. Are your people empowered to move your organization forward?


Tuesday, March 21

10 a.m. — Competition: Thriving in Your Markets: The influx of for-profit senior living providers in markets across the country is unmistakable. Not only are these for-profit providers competing for non-profit market share, they are also competing for non-profit messaging — consumers are having an increasingly difficult time differentiating between non-profit and for-profit providers. How will your organization stand out in the markets it serves?

10:45 a.m. — Mission AND Margin: Non-profit senior living communities are simultaneously businesses and missions. Rather than competing, these two roles work best in tandem. That is, it’s mission and margin rather than mission versus margin. The stronger a business model and the stronger an organization’s bottom line, the greater the impact that organization can make through execution and expansion of its mission. Are you strengthening your organization’s mission through stronger margin?

11:30 a.m. — Workforce and Talent Development: The future of senior living rests in the hands of all of us — the types of leaders who gather for PEAK. If you could wave a magic wand and create any type of future you want for your organization and the senior living industry at large, what type of future would you create?

Photos: See Repositioning Results at The Terraces at Los Altos

The end of a long-term repositioning project at ABHOW’s The Terraces at Los Altos has arrived, and the final results are spectacular. The three-phase project’s construction first started in the summer of 2012 when ABHOW chose to move forward with revitalization plans at one of its oldest communities.

The first phase of repositioning included new memory support and skilled nursing units. A second phase added assisted living and commons areas. And a third phase created 87 independent living units, more commons areas and a parking garage at the campus in Los Altos, Calif.

The campus now features a total of 105 independent living units, 30 assisted living units, 16 memory support suites and 30 skilled nursing beds. The repositioning kept the community’s buildings small by intention in order to reflect the location of the campus within a large-yet-intimate residential area.

The impact of repositioning at The Terraces at Los Altos was evident even before the project’s completion. It earned recognition as the Best Repositioning of 2015, according to Senior Housing News. Now that the project is fully complete, The Terraces at Los Altos will move forward as one of California’s premier Life Plan Communities.

UCF Secures BANs Financing for Legacy Pointe Project

The University of Central Florida has secured nearly $14 million in financing for Legacy Pointe at UCF, a Life Plan Community proposed for 43.52 acres just a mile northeast of campus in Oviedo. The financing arrived in December 2016 via bond anticipation notes (BANs) underwritten by Ziegler.

Legacy Pointe at UCF is expected to include 126 independent living units, 30 independent living cottages, 48 assisted living units, 32 memory support suites and 48 skilled nursing beds. Construction should begin in early 2019 with the project scheduled for completion and opening in summer of 2020.

The Buckingham’s Expansion Takes Shape in Houston

Scaffolding has appeared as The Buckingham expands its life plan community campus in Houston. This Senior Quality Lifestyles Corporation-sponsored community is in the process of adding 106 independent living apartments, 27 assisted living units, 18 memory support suites and 32 skilled nursing beds.

Workers are currently installing windows and exterior finishes. The project will be completed in phases, with the earliest phase opening in 2017’s second quarter.

In addition to its duties as management consultant at The Buckingham, Greystone is also serving as development consultant on this expansion project.

Santa Marta’s Health Care Expansion Nearing Completion

Santa Marta is pushing toward completion of a health care expansion at its life plan community campus in Olathe, Kan. The $11 project will add eight assisted living units, 12 memory support suites and 18 private skilled nursing beds, as well as a new physical therapy gym.

The skilled nursing portion of the project is expected to be ready for occupancy this November. Workers are currently painting and installing flooring, tile and wall coverings. Final grading has also started in preparation for landscaping.

The assisted living and memory support portions of the project are expected to be ready for occupancy this December. Workers are currently installing showers and finishing drywall. Painting will soon commence.

In addition to its duties as management consultant at Santa Marta, Greystone is also development consultant on this expansion project. See photos of progress in the gallery below.

Growth Continues at Masonic Homes of Kentucky

Louisville’s finest life plan community continues to grow thanks to a stellar brand reputation, strong demand and a mission that seeks to provide outstanding senior living options.

Masonic Homes of Kentucky broke ground this month on The Meadow, a 122-unit independent living community that will include an 80-seat movie theater, a 300-seat performance space, a café and other amenities.

“When we take on a project like The Meadow, we do so with our key values in mind: growth, innovation, remarkable service and passion above all,” said MHKY President and CEO Gary Marsh in an Insider Louisville story.

The Meadow is nearing 90 percent in presales, which is the same marketing success that MHKY has enjoyed with previous projects on its 82-acre Louisville campus. An upcoming bond issue is expected to finance the $44 million needed for The Meadow plus an additional $14 million for Grove Pointe, an assisted living center also planned for MHKY’s Louisville campus.

Greystone is serving as marketing and development consultant on The Meadow project. Other project team members include Reese Design Collaborative, Paul Mattingly/Congleton-Hacker Constructors and AG Architecture.

Gulf Coast Village’s Expansion Pushes Toward Completion

Work continues on an expansion project at Gulf Coast Village, a Volunteers of America-sponsored continuing care retirement community in Cape Coral, Fla. The expansion includes a new health center that will include 80 assisted living units and 48 memory support units. A second phase will include redevelopment of the existing skilled nursing center, resulting in a total of 105 beds.

Gulf Coast Village first opened in 1989. Greystone is serving as development consultant on this expansion project in addition to its duties as management consultant.

Baptist Life Communities Finances New Project in Alexandria (Ky.)

Plans will now accelerate into high gear for The Seasons at Alexandria, a new senior living project sponsored by Baptist Life Communities (BLC) and planned for Alexandria, Ky. Ziegler closed this month on the $64.420 million bond financing.

The Seasons will replace BLC’s existing Baptist Convalescent Center, located just eight miles north of where The Seasons will be developed. Phase I of The Seasons will include 117 skilled nursing beds and 66 personal care beds. Phase II will add 60 independent living units and a number of amenities.

BLC also owns and operates Baptist Village in Erlanger (Ky.) and Griesser Farm in Burlington (Ky.).
